If you are coming from outside the area, you may want to add some extra
days onto your visit before or after camp. New England is a great
place to visit in the summer, full of history and beauty.
In the eastern portion of Massachusetts are areas that are loaded with
the early history of the United States. Besides Boston and Cambridge,
nearby towns include Lexington and Concord, as well as Salem,
with its own claim to fame — witches! Further up the coast is Gloucester,
where the movie A Perfect Storm was based and filmed. A bit inland
is Walden Pond, made famous by Thoreau. Along the southern coast
is the living museum of early European settler life at Plymouth Plantation.

At the southeastern end of Massachusetts is the very popular
vacation spot of Cape Cod, with its beaches and seaside
towns. A short ferry ride away are the picturesque islands of Martha's
Vineyard and Nantucket.
In Rhode Island, places to visit include the city of Providence,
the opulent mansions of Newport and the beaches of Narragansett.
At the southern end of the state in the fishing village of Pt. Judith is
the ferry service to Block Island.
To the north of Massachusetts in the state of New Hampshire are
the White Mountains. Besides the extensive hiking trails,
there are many other sites to visit including
scenic walks through waterfall laced gorges and cool caves.
Fourth
of July Celebrations
If you are attending camp this year, you might want to consider
staying a couple of extra days after to attend one of the
nearby Fourth
of July celebrations.
This year the 4th is on the Friday after camp.
Boston's
Fourth of July
is known as the premier Independence Day celebration in the
nation. Hundreds of thousands of people come from all over
the country to the banks of the Charles
River to celebrate America's birthday. The highlight of
the evening is a 30 minute fireworks spectacular choreographed
to music. When we danced with the Kamikaze Jitterbugs in
the mid-1990s, we had the good fortune of having the opportunity
to perform on-stage
at the Hatch Shell with Keith Lockhart and the Boston
Pops Esplanade Orchestra for the Fourth. It was an evening
we will never forget.

Newton's
Independence Day Celebration!
is a fun local event held each year at Albemarle Field in
Newtonville. We don't know the schedule for this year
yet but typically from noon until dusk there is an Open Air
Market with
handmade crafts, exotic ethnic foods, games and amusement rides.
At 6:00pm the evening entertainment begins with the live music
playing Swing, Big Band, Rock 'n' Roll and Patriotic music. The
evening
will culminate with fantastic fireworks
beginning around 9:00pm when it gets dark.
